If you love to water ski and want to take it up a notch then you might like to indulge in slalom water skiing. This is an exciting form of this sport that requires a certain amount of skill and poise. Instead of skiing on 2 skies you are putting both your feet on just one slalom water ski. Because this requires balance and skill you need to choose your skies carefully.

Choosing a slalom water ski:

The first thing to think about is your weight and how fast you usually ski. These 2 factors will be a deciding factor in the size of slalom water ski you need. Generally the heavier you are the larger the ski will be. You should discuss this with your local sports salesperson before you buy. Sometimes for faster speed you may have a slightly smaller ski.

Your skill level should also be considered. The manufacturer will recommend a ski to fit certain skill levels. For example as a beginner you will want a slalom ski that you can control. If you select a ski above your skills it could prove dangerous for you. You can always upgrade as your water skiing improves.

Size matters! Be sure that the boots fit you well. If they are too tight you may even break an ankle or a knee if you fall suddenly. Too loose is also dangerous. Boots come in different styles, ranging from toe covers to full boots. Choose the ones that are suitable for you and that you feel comfortable with.

A fin system will add to the fun of a slalom water ski. Again your choice will depend on personal preference. It will also depend on your style of water skiing and how you take your turns.

How to use your slalom water ski:

Positioning your feet: Put your weakest foot in front and the strongest behind. This is because your back foot will act as a balance and help you position yourself. It will also assist you in rising out of the water as the boat pulls you.

Slowly accelerate: The boat should slowly get faster to allow the rope to get tight. Once it is taut and you are ready be sure to align your body, legs and arms with the rope. Hold the rope with your palms down.

Balance: It is harder to balance and control yourself on one ski so do not get disheartened if it takes a little more time to master this skill. When you do you will really enjoy this exciting form of water skiing.

Choosing the right water ski rope is important. You should take into consideration what you are going to do with it. Are you going to compete as a professional water skier or just water ski for recreation purposes? If you are just water skiing for fun, then you will not have to spend so much on the ropes. So do not go out and get expensive equipment unless you really have to. You can spend the money you save on other equipment, including your boat!

So what other factors should you consider when purchasing water ski rope? Here are a few things to bear in mind.

Correct length: recreational ski rope should be 75 ft, with handles included. Competition ones are also 75 feet, handles and pigtails make up 5 feet of the total length. The ropes must be certified by the American Water Ski Association. These water ski ropes have loops at certain points to enable the user to shorten the rope according to various skill levels. They have different colors for each loop. There are 10 loops with the shortest rope length being black and 33 feet long. In actual fact you will on average only need 5 loops but the tournament ropes are usually made with a standard of 10 loops.

Durability: there is a lot of wear and tear on water ski ropes which is why competition ones are much more sturdy and durable. Recreation ones are made differently and are lighter.

Removable first section: Does the rope have a removable first section? The first 15 feet are usually removable as competitive water skiers do not need a full length. This makes the rope less cumbersome to pack away when not in use. It is also more convenient for the user as they do not have to adjust the extra length.

Combos: water ski ropes can come with or without handles. You may prefer handles from one company and ropes from another. If this is the case then you have the option to buy them separately. However you can also buy a combo rope that has handles that will cost you a little less than buying separately.

Handles: there are 2 sorts of handles; straight and elliptical. It is purely a matter of personal choice which ones you prefer. Length and diameter may also sway your choice and you may like open sided handles or closed ones. All these factors will help you to decide which handles are best for you.

One of the things that the majority of folks find most challenging about purchasing water ski equipment is how to find quality stuff at a reasonable price. Gear can be quite expensive, especially if you do not know which brands are best. At the same time you do not want to get cheap shoddy stuff that will not last for even one season. In order to get your money’s worth without skimping on quality you will need to take into consideration a couple of things.

Firstly you will need to watch out for durability. Water skiing is a sport that puts a lot of strain on the equipment and it needs to be able to stand the stress. So when you shop for equipment you will need to get good long lasting gear.

Secondly you should take into consideration your level of skill at this sport. Obviously if you are just a beginner you do not need expensive skis. You can always upgrade as your skills and pocket book grows.

That being said, the question still remains how to find quality water ski equipment. One of the first places to check is review sites. These sites usually give unbiased reviews about certain makes of equipment and you can get a rough idea about what brands consistently come up with good reviews.

Another good place to look is the forums. These are discussion groups of people who are interested in a certain topic, for example water skiing. These people love to discuss about their topic and will be happy to give you their opinion about certain brands of water ski equipment. Do not take one person’s opinion try to listen to a number of people as some people have bad experiences and others good about a particular brand. If you check out a number of forums and review sites you will get a better overall picture.

Word of mouth is another way to get some idea about what to buy and what not to buy. If you have friends who water ski they can very likely tell you about their experiences with certain brands and how to get the best value for your money.

When you actually go to purchase your water ski equipment you may want to take along a friend who has experience in the sport. In this way they will be able to advise you and help you to choose the best quality without paying an arm and a leg for it.
